International student mobility: A systematic review and research agenda

Abstract: This study aimed to synthesize fragmented knowledge about international student mobility (ISM) in higher education to provide an understanding of existing studies and directions for future research. To this end, the authors conducted a systematic literature review using a hybrid approach that integrated bibliometric analysis with the theory, context, and method (TCM) framework (Paul et al., Journal of World Business, 2017;52(3):327-342). Applying bibliometric analysis, this study found publication trends, prol… Show more

“…Future reviews may incorporate papers from other sources, like conference proceedings, books and/or book chapters, WOS or CABS AJG, across journal categories and citation figures for increased inclusivity and reduced positive outcome bias (Narayanan & Singh, 2023). Secondly, future reviews may utilize other multi‐faceted frameworks like 5WIH over ADO‐TCM framework (Luo et al, 2023; Paul et al, 2021), which may be more objective and may not require statistical validation (Wolf, 2023).…”

“…We relied on the approach adopted by Goyal and Kumar (2021) to filter the articles and create a sub-data set to conduct a manageable and quality-enabled content analysis. For this We adopted this approach to endow our review with seminal insights and recent advancements in the domain (Hao et al, 2019;Luo et al, 2023).…”

“…Therefore, keeping these glaring gaps in the purview, we follow state‐of‐the‐art hybrid systematic review articles (Behl et al, 2022; Goyal & Kumar, 2021; Jebarajakirthy et al, 2021; Loureiro et al, 2021; Luo et al, 2023; Mariani et al, 2023; Sharma et al, 2020; Sureka et al, 2022; Tsiotsou & Boukis, 2022) for mapping performance trends, examining the intellectual structure and evaluating the extant research (as per TCCM framework) of anthropomorphism and consumer behaviour research.…”

“…However, it alone does not explain the TCM that could guide future research. Similarly, the TCM framework is useful for replicating or making discoveries in any research domain (Luo et al, 2023;Mishra et al, 2021;Narayanan & Singh, 2023); it provides limited insights into any phenomenon as compared to the ADO framework (Lim et al, 2021); ergo, the integration of the two frameworks is logical.…”
