Internet of Robotic Things: Concept, Technologies, and Challenges

Abstract: Internet of Things allow massive number of uniquely addressable ''things'' to communicate with each other and transfer data over existing internet or compatible network protocols. This paper proposes a new concept which tackles the issues for supporting control and monitoring activities at deployment sites and industrial automations, where intelligent things can monitor peripheral events, induce sensor data acquired from a variety of sources, use ad hoc, local, and distributed ''machine intelligence'' to deter… Show more

“…NEP is a Robotics platform support. According to the definition classification done in [38] NEP is a IoRT robotics platform. Unlike ROS and YARP that provide a large variety of tools and algorithms for low-level development in robotics (e.g., simulators, inverse kinematic and planners), NEP focuses only on communication and the monitoring of data.…”

“…This direction, called the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT), is aimed at implementing robotic technologies, by extending the functionality of IoT devices. In [18], the IoRT concept is presented, which emphasizes the tremendous flexibility in developing and implementing new applications for networked robotics while achieving the goal of providing distributed computing resources as the main utility. In these network associations (IoT and IoRT), the term "Internet" can be interpreted as a global association of computer networks that use TCP/IP protocols when interacting with each other.…”
