Internet of Things for improving Supply Chain Performance: A Qualitative Study of Australian Retailers

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) is a global platform of Internet connected smart devices that have been argued to improve the supply chain integration (SCI). While the positive effect of IoT capability on SCI influencing supply chain and firm performance is empirically validated, exploratory study in this context is limited. Drawing upon the organisational capability theory, this study investigates the use of IoT in enhancing the integration of suppliers, customers and internal activities of the retail supply chain. … Show more

“…Several research papers addressed the impact of IoT on supply chain and business performance and examined it from different angles, such as a systematic literature review (Tiwari, 2021), IoT as an enabler for supply chain visibility (Anitha et al, 2020), RFID as a form of IoT technology (Zhou et al, 2015), IoT in retail channel integration as a bridge between supply and demand (Caro and Sadr, 2019). Other recent studies examined the role of IoT on SCI and performance from the perspective of organisational capabilities (OCs) (de Vass et al, 2018a(de Vass et al, , 2018b, while some others focused on "IoT-enabled" dynamic supply chain performance management (DSCPM, see Dweekat and Al-Aomar, 2018), the impact of IoT on global SCM (Shah and Ververi, 2018) or the creation of an SC performance index based on IoT (Tenghong and Li, 2011).…”

“…89 Furthermore, BT ensures data authenticity and uninterrupted flow by countering willful infringements, reducing supply chain risks, and causing business trustworthiness. 90 Additionally, with a continuous increase in fraudulent activities, governmental bodies and industrial cartels have over-emphasized the importance of transparency across chains, causing frequent adoption of SCI and BT. 5 Hence, the study reasonably enriches the scientific knowledge by making researchers available with empirical proof for the association between BTs and SSCP.…”

“…Retail giants such as Walmart and Amazon have leveraged real-time data analytics to personalize marketing campaigns, optimize pricing strategies, and efficiently manage their inventory (Hossain et al, 2021). These companies have utilized technologies like RFID, IoT, and advanced analytics platforms to gather real-time data, analyze consumer behavior, and make data-driven decisions (Vass et al, 2018;Akinruli et al, 2021). For instance, IoT technologies have enabled retailers to constantly monitor store environments, enhance security, and improve service quality (Hossain et al, 2021).…”
