Air pollution, water pollution, and radiation pollution are significant environmental factors that need to be addressed. Proper monitoring is crucial with the goal that by preserving a healthy society, the planet can achieve sustainable development. With advancements in the internet of things (IoT) and the improvement of modern sensors, environmental monitoring has evolved into a smart environment monitoring (SEM) system in recent years. This article aims to have a critical overview of significant contributions and SEM research, which include monitoring the quality of air , water pollution, radiation pollution, and agricultural systems. The review is divided based on the objectives of applying SEM methods, analyzing each objective about the sensors used, machine learning, and classification methods. Moreover, the authors have thoroughly examined how advancements in sensor technology, the Internet of Things, and machine learning methods have made environmental monitoring into a truly smart monitoring system.

An IoT (Internet of Things) system for monitoring campus environmental parameters was successfully developed in this study. Various sensors were adopted in the front of IoT system for sensing air pollutants. The architecture of LongRange (LoRa) in Class C uses low-power and long-distance transmission technologies, which has been set up on the large campus, so that the terminal equipment can reach a balance between downlink latency and battery life, making it the best transmission communication protocol. In addition, this monitoring system uses the Petri net software tool to build a correct IoT platform based on the fundamental working processes, and to demonstrate the feasibility of the IoT system through simulation-based verification. Finally, the experimental results have shown that the IoT system for monitoring the campus environmental parameters achieves the goal of an acceptable data transmission success rate of more than 95%. Thus, it can facilitate the air quality trends for policy making as well as the hazardous prediction and prevention.

Here, we propose a method to create a transparent security system based on printed conductive indium tin oxide (ITO)—the most widely used transparent conducting oxide material integrated into the devices with high transparency. Commonly used solution-processed ITO annealing methods are utilizing temperatures which are limiting the use of flexible polymeric substrates. Our method combines inkjet printing on flexible temperature-stable colorless polyimide (CPI) substrate with fast flash lamp annealing (FLA). In this study, millisecond pulses of visible light from a xenon lamp induce rapid heating of the ITO films up to 650°C through the light-absorbing additional layer of a colored organic dye onto printed ITO, whereas the CPI bulk never exceeds the melting point. Fabricated flexible ITO patterns on CPI film processed with the flash lamp annealing through the dye layer exhibit a transmittance of up to 85% at the wavelength of 550 nm and sheet resistance of 520 Ω/sq for a 70 nm layer thickness. With the proposed technology of our demonstrator realization—transparent glass/window or any other object such as a curved door lock can be used for integrating a touch-enabled transparent security access system, which would be completely invisible.
