Interpolation techniques for modeling and estimating indoor radon concentrations in Ohio: Comparative study

Abstract: Radon‐222 and its parent, radium‐226, is a naturally occurring radioactive decay product of uranium‐238. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) states that 10% of total lung cancer cases in the United States are directly attributable to indoor radon. The USEPA has categorized Ohio as a Zone 1 state (i.e., the average indoor radon screening level is greater than 4 pCi/L). To implement preventive measures, it is necessary to know radon concentration levels in all the zip codes of a geographic area. Howev… Show more

“…The major strength of these networks is their ease of implementation and management and therefore, they are suitable for approximating any type of input and output (Hornik et al, 1989).When designing theANN70% of the data were used for training, 15% for testing and 15% for validation. The ANN structure was manually adjusted until the highest correlation was achieved using a trial-and-error process (Gummadi, 2013 andMorgan et al, 2017). The ANNs performance was assessed in terms of the coefficient of determination (r 2 ).…”

“…Therefore, it can be concluded with high certainty that the model results are valid for any operating conditions constructed by the predefined ranges. Detailed comparison between different statistical approaches e.g., Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Regression (SVR) and Kriging can be found in literatures [33,34] .…”
