Interrelation of Microstructure and Corrosion Resistance in Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys with Aluminum, Lithium and Rare Earth Additions

Abstract: The inuence of equal channel angular pressing and rotary swaging on the microstructure and corrosion resistance was investigated in three magnesium alloys with the addition of aluminum, lithium and rare earth elements AE21, AE42 and LAE442. The processing resulted in grain renement in all cases; nevertheless, the eect on the corrosion resistance was ambiguous. A continuous increase of the polarization resistance during the gradual equal channel angular pressing was observed in the AE42 and LAE442 alloys, where… Show more

“…In contrast, electrochemical measurements took place at pre-defined immersion times, i.e., corrosion processes have already been realized for some time, and thus short-term processes could remain undiscovered. Therefore, AE can provide missing information about the development of corrosion processes with high time resolution [44][45][46][47][48]. In addition, propagation of the corrosion layer is studied by backscattered electron (BSE) imaging and grain orientation mapping on the cross-section of the specimens.…”

“…A recent review paper of Esmaily et al [32] and references therein bear witness that the AE technique is widely omitted in the corrosion studies of magnesium and its alloys even though it can provide unique in-situ information, which can be hardly revealed by commonly used electrochemical, imaging, and spectroscopy methods. There is a very limited number of AE studies concerning corrosion in magnesium [10,[33][34][35] and these existing papers evaluate only basic AE parameters.…”
