Interrupted inferior vena cava and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return with atrial septal defect in a 38-year-old adult: a case report

Abstract: We present a woman having congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return from the right lung with atrial septal defect in a 38-year-old. Congenital anomalies of inferior vena cava are rare. They are seen more often in young males. If there are not other anomalies, they are latent for a long time. Peripheral venous thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency, dyspnea and fatigue are often the first symptoms of these anomalies. Surgical repair of atrial septal defect wi… Show more

“…[4] Symptoms and prognosis are related to associated congenital heart disease. [23] This finding also can have an impact on interventional procedures (IVC filter placement) and surgical procedures (esophagectomy, liver transplants). According to Sheley and colleagues,[12] post-natal survival was related to the severity of the associated heart disease.…”

“…Most of the previous reports of isolated IVC interruption have been in adults. [ 2 8 13 ] We feel the bi-caval view is extremely useful in demonstrating this anomaly along with demonstration of the azygos continuation to the SVC. Pre-natal counseling for this vascular anomaly should include the likelihood of possible development of sick sinus syndrome in future and the increased risk for venous thrombosis.…”

“…The prevalence of azygos continuation of the IVC approaches 0.6–2% in association with congenital heart defects and less than 0.3% when isolated. [ 2 ]…”

“…We present a case of a woman diagnosed with CCTGA who, on echocardiography, had anomalous venous drainage where the inferior vena cava (IVC) bypassed the right atrium (RA) and drained into the azygos system. Interrupted IVC with azygos continuation is rare in adults, 1,2 and should be considered in complex congenital cardiac cases. In pediatric congenital heart disease cases, interrupted IVC with azygos continuation is more common, and it is important to exclude partial anomalous pulmonary venous return 3,4 .…”
