Interspecific incompatibility in wide hybridization of plants and ways to overcome

Abstract: Wide hybridization is an important factor of angiosperm speciation and provides an introgression of genes between species. In experimental conditions wide hybridization is used to increase the genetic diversity of cultivated plants. Since the emergence of reproductive barriers is of great importance for speciation, plant capacity for wide crosses is determined by a possibility of overcoming these barriers. The review discusses the main types of incompatibility in wide crossing plants, as well as factors and me… Show more

“…Studies of interspecific and intergeneric diversity in cytoplasms and nucleus-cytoplasm interactions have been extended to various phenotypes including male-sterility 11 13 , growth vigor 11 , viability 14 , inter-crossability and speciation 15 , 16 , photosynthesis and respiration 17 , 18 , transcriptomes and metabolomes 19 , and other agronomically important traits 20 22 . In such studies, hexaploid and tetraploid NC hybrids with cytoplasms of Triticum , Aegilops , Agropyron, Haynaldia and a wild relative of barley Hordeum chilense have been used.…”

“…In earlier research (Asbani 2008), an array of putative interspecific hybrid progenies has been produced by intercrossing Indonesian J. curcas accessions to J. integerrima. The limited number of progenies formed from interspecific crossing can be due to incompatibility between the two species (Pershina and Trubacheeva 2017). Moreover, the putative interspecific hybrid progenies were morphologically closely related to the female J. curcas parent (Asbani 2008).…”

(Podhaietskyi, 2012;Podhaietskyi et.…”
