Interspecific patterns of small cats in an intraguild-killer free area of the threatened Caatinga drylands, Brazil

Abstract: The semi-arid Caatinga is the largest dry forest ecoregion in the Americas; nevertheless, it is experiencing alarming rates of habitat loss. Most vegetation fragments in the biome are either unprotected or within private lands; however, these private areas are susceptible to anthropogenic activity, and often have the presence of non-native wildlife such as domestic dogs and cats. Two small felid species, the northern tiger cat and the jaguarundi co-occur throughout the Caatinga and have overlapping niches, whi… Show more

“…We set 21 camera traps in MPNR, 22 in CSJIMD and 23 in CSCD inside their native forest covers, which were arranged in a 1 km 2 grid with an average spacing of 962 ± 84 m following previous study designs on space use by neotropical small felids [ 30 , 37 , 44 , 45 ]. Excluding the damaged or stolen cameras, we were able to collect data from 58 sampling stations for subsequent analysis ( Table 1 ).…”

“…This generated an effort of 50,000 trap-nights, 7000 hours of active searches in night transections, 1100 live-catch traps/night, in addition to 300,000 kilometers of highways traveled in the search for individuals that had been run over. Camera trapping followed standard and well-established protocols that targeted small cats (for a detailed description see [34][35][36]). In 2021, at the Saicã site, which covers 51,000 hectares and is located between the municipalities of Rosario do Sul and Cacequi (RS), we deployed 6-9 camera traps spaced at ca.…”
