“…19,20 Edentulism is a common feature in older subjects, 1-6 particularly in institutionalized older people. [1][2][3][4] Although accumulation of plaque on dentures is known to be a causative agent for oral infections, especially denturerelated stomatitis, 31,32 and to act as a reservoir of bacteria and fungi that are implicated in the development of aspiration pneumonia in hospitalized older people, 7,33,34 a surprisingly small number of studies has been conducted to evaluate whether edentate older people with poor hand motor skills have more plaque on their dentures than older people with good hand function. The existing evidence is far from conclusive but indicates that institutionalized older people who reported difficulties performing oral hygiene more frequently had denture stomatitis.…”
