Interventions to reduce colonisation and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in intensive care units: an interrupted time series study and cluster randomised trial
Abstract:SummaryBackgroundIntensive care units (ICUs) are high-risk areas for transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, but no controlled study has tested the effect of rapid screening and isolation of carriers on transmission in settings with best-standard precautions. We assessed interventions to reduce colonisation and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in European ICUs.MethodsWe did this study in three phases at 13 ICUs. After a 6 month baseline period (phase 1), we did an interrupted time ser… Show more

“…19,20 Active screening programs increase the identification of patients colonized with VRE and reduce the time before contact precautions are implemented. 21 However, the efficacy of contact precautions to prevent the spread of antimicrobial-resistant organisms including VRE has been questioned in 2 randomized controlled trials, 22,23 and studies investigating the impact of discontinuation of VRE screening and isolation practices have given conflicting results. [24][25][26][27] Infection control practices for VRE in Canadian institutions are increasingly heterogeneous, and there is no clear consensus on the best approach.…”

“…Among ESCresistant Enterobacteriaceae cultured from colonized patients, 88.7% were phenotypically determined as ESBL-producers [6]. The epidemiology and transmissibility of organisms with plasmidic resistance support may substantially differ from chromosomic resistance mechanisms (e.g.…”

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
