Interview for Deterioration in Daily Living Activities in Dementia: construct and concurrent validity in patients with mild to moderate dementia

Abstract: A four factor model of the IDDD can be used in dementia research for assessing initiative in and performance of basic and household activities of daily living. The findings suggest that ADL scales correlate only poorly and that further development of the IDDD is needed to cover a broader range of ADLs.

“…Amnestic mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease are characterized by decreased memory, which is assessed by the ability to learn and remember new information. Patients may experience cognitive and functional losses during course of the disease and have problems in simple daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and excretion . This condition may adversely influence patients' quality of life.…”

“…The original IDDD has been found to be a valid and reliable measure of everyday functioning, which was lacking further activities (Voigt‐Radloff et al ., ). The R‐IDDD2 has been found to be an internally valid measure of everyday functioning (Giebel et al ., submitted).…”

“…Other PwD may struggle to carry out the activity, so that such interventions would more likely be effective. The few studies into initiative and performance in dementia available are inconclusive as to which area is mostly preserved in the mild stages, which may be a result of the mix of dementia types in the samples under investigation (Giebel et al ., ; Teunisse et al ., ; Voigt‐Radloff et al ., ). To the best of our knowledge, no research has compared the initiative and performance of IADLs by subtype, so that this study will offer novel insights which could aid differential diagnoses.…”

“…Secondary outcomes were daily functioning as measured with the IDDD [11], resource utilization (Resource Utilization in Dementia (RUD)) [12, 13] and satisfaction with treatment measured with a verbal rating scale (ranging from 1 = very satisfied to 5 = very unsatisfied). Furthermore, we assessed several control measures: cognitive status (MMSE [8]), dementia stage (Reisberg Clinical Dementia Rating), challenging behavior assessed by the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) [14, 15] and treatment costs using a cost unit rate of €60 per treatment hour including all costs (personnel, material, travel, overheads).…”
