“…Inventory data from mixed forests were obtained by combining observations from three sources: the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) (Fischer & Traub, 2019), the Experimental Forest Management (EFM) network (Forrester et al., 2021b), and the Swiss Natural Forest Reserves (NFR) (Hobi et al., 2020). The data cover a range of latitudes between 46.0° and 47.8°, longitudes between 6.12° and 10.5°, and elevations between 334 and 2,154 m a.s.l.…”

“…(2017). The NFI data set provided biomass estimates following the methodology described in Fischer and Traub (2019). For these plots, biomass is calculated from the estimated volume of the living trees based on species‐specific wood densities.…”

“…Despite the immediate interest in five‐ or ten‐year periodicity for international forest reporting, dividing surveys into ten or five interpenetrating and complementary fractions is far less obvious. Examples of large‐scale forest surveys implementing panel fractionation that do not meet these typical periodicity constraints include the NFIs of Romania (four annual panels, Bouriaud et al, 2020) and Switzerland (nine annual panels, Fischer & Traub, 2019).…”

“…In a second step, the potential routes from the landings out of the forest were analysed by network analysis. The endpoints of the transportation route-referred to as "connection points"-were defined as the points where the route reaches the superordinate road network, that is, a road that can be used by the largest truck type considered in the study at any time (5 axle trucks with 40 t total weight), as determined in the interview survey of the Swiss NFI (Fischer and Fraefel 2019). Since the use of a larger truck reduces the number of trips necessary to transport a certain volume of wood (Table 2), and therefore hauling costs, we minimised the distance between a landing and the nearest connection point while maximising truck size.…”
