Intestinal Injuries Associated with the Novasure Bipolar Device

Abstract

Background: The Novasure device employs biopolar thermal coagulation in order to ablate the endometrium. It is one of a class of blind, nonhysteroscopic techniques utilized for the treatment of abnormal (i.e., dysfunctional) uterine bleeding. Cases: Three cases are presented where the Novasure device was employed for endometrial ablation. Each case demonstrated thermal intestinal injuries associated with the use of the Novasure device. Conclusions: Despite several safeguards devised by the manufacturer, the Novasure bipolar device can and will perforate the uterus and cause thermal injury leading to intestinal perforation.
