“…Although there is no good evidence that antibiotics alter the course of disease, they are thought to be efficacious for two reasons: (1) colonic ischemia predisposes to mucosal permeability and the potential for bacterial translocation, and (2) animal studies have shown that antibiotics can reduce the length and severity of bowel damage. 21,22 The use of pharmacologic intervention, such as glucagon and papaverine, has been described to increase intestinal circulation, but the benefit has not been well documented and therefore this practice has yet to gain wide clinical use. 23 No attempt should be made to prepare the bowel for surgery during the acute phase of the illness as this may precipitate a colonic perforation or toxic dilation.…”
