Intimate Partner Violence and Drinking among Victims of Adult Sexual Assault

Abstract: Intimate partner violence is associated with problem drinking. Correlates of alcohol consumption frequency and problem drinking were examined among female sexual assault survivors (N = 1863). Data were analyzed with blockwise multiple regressions. “…Individuals with histories of substantiated CM compared to non-abused controls were not more likely to abuse alcohol (Horan & Widom, 2015; Nikulina et al, 2012). In several studies, CSA was not associated with alcohol-related behaviors among samples of college students (Klanecky et al, 2012; Tyler et al, 2015), men (Skinner et al, 2016), women with sexual assault histories (Ullman & Sigurvinsdottir, 2015), low-income Latina women (Ulibarri et al, 2015), and women identified as early-onset alcohol users (Jenkins et al, 2011).…”

“…The majority of studies found significant positive associations between ACEs and problematic adult drinking behavior ( N = 35), but several studies reported mixed effects ( N = 13), and eleven studies did not find significant associations (Agorastos et al, 2014; Carlson, Oshri, & Kwon, 2015; Horan & Widom, 2015; Hostinar, Lachman, Mroczek, Seeman, & Miller, 2015; Klanecky, McChargue, & Bruggeman, 2012; Klanecky, Woolman, & Becker, 2015; Nikulina, Widom, & Brzustowicz, 2012; Salem et al, 2013; Tyler, Schmitz, & Adams, 2015; Ulibarri, Ulloa, & Salazar, 2015; Ullman & Sigurvinsdottir, 2015). For example, summary adversity scores were not associated with problematic alcohol-related behaviors in multiple study populations, including the MIDUS II Study (Hostinar et al, 2015), male Marines (Agorastos et al, 2014), some samples of college students (Carlson, Oshri, et al, 2015; Goldstein et al, 2010; Klanecky et al, 2012; Klanecky et al, 2015), urban lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) AI/AN (Yuan et al, 2014), and recently paroled men (Salem et al, 2013).…”

“…In the United States, an estimated 35.6% of women have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetimes; nearly half have experienced psychological aggression from an intimate partner (Black et al., ). Exposure to violence or abuse from an intimate partner has been associated with elevated rates of mental health symptoms and diagnoses, including: depression (Beydoun, Beydoun, Kaufman, Lo, & Zonderman, ; Bonomi et al., ; Kimerling, Alvarez, Pavao, Kaminski, & Baumrind, ; Lagdon, Armour, & Stringer, ; Ouellet‐Morin et al., ; Stockman, Hayashi, & Campbell, ) and other mood disorders (Iverson et al., ; Stockman et al., ), anxiety (Bonomi et al., ; Iverson et al., ; Kimerling et al., ; Lagdon et al., ), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Iverson et al., ; Kimerling et al., ; Lagdon et al., ; Stockman et al., ), alcohol and substance use disorders (Lagdon et al., ; Ullman & Sigurvinsdottir, ), and suicidality (Iverson et al., ; Lagdon et al., ; Stockman et al., ).…”

“…Thai female drinkers generally drank alcohol infrequently and at low level [17], which might have contributed to the lower prevalence of domestic violence. The relatively high prevalence of violence among households where both spouses drank led to a question on whether the drinking and violence in this group were signs of maladaptive coping among spouses with history of experiencing intimate partner violence themselves [29]. Nonetheless, caution is advised against the assumption that domestic violence occurred due to alcohol use by men.…”
