Intra-body data transmission for the personal area network

Abstract: Intra-body communication is a wireless means of exchanging information within a personal area network (PAN) between wearable electronic sensors and devices. The feasibility of intra-body communication is confirmed through several experiments on signal propagation within the human body, and a human phantom is designed and used to obtain reproducible results over repeated experiments. Based on the results of these experiments, a prototype transmission system is constructed using aluminum electrodes powered by 3 … Show more

“…The capacitive coupling HBC, also called near-field coupling [31], and electrostatic coupling [17,32] are described in Figure 2. The signal electrodes at both transmitter and receiver are attached on the human skin, while the ground electrodes are floating in air.…”

“…For instance in [17], the carrier frequency and bandwidth were determined via the −3 dB frequency response. In [32], 10 MHz was suggested to be the suitable carrier frequency due to its maximum channel gain. Similarly in [60], suitable frequency range (from 200 MHz to 600 MHz) for transmission was determined corresponding to the lowest path loss.…”

“…If the touchelectrodes are fabricated from a conductor, the effect of the electrode material on intra-body communication is marginal, see, e.g., [12]. In [4], aluminum and copper electrodes as well as pre-gelled electrodes, such as commercial AgCl electrodes used for electro-cardiogram measurements have been tested.…”
