Intracanal dressing and root canal filling materials in tooth replantation: a literature review

Abstract: The prognosis of tooth replantation is usually related to the need of endodontic treatment, which has a direct relationship with the occurrence of root resorptions. Several studies have been undertaken in an attempt to prevent, delay, or treat these complications, which are the main causes of loss of replanted teeth. This literature review examines research evidence on intracanal dressings and root canal filling materials used in cases of tooth replantation. “…Despite great effort, the antiresorptive agents tested to date fail to avoid inflammatory resorption followed by ankylosis in dental avulsion cases (35). Furthermore, the therapeutic inhibition of bone resorption by BPs seems to decrease after dosing is stopped, indicating that the bound drug is not totally biologically active (5,6).…”

“…EIRR treatment protocol includes disinfection by irrigation and the use of calcium hydroxide as intracanal medication of choice for RCS disinfection (2)(3)(4). To arrest the resorption, the replacement of the calcium hydroxide paste is necessary, requiring several appointments for maintenance of calcium hydroxide in the RCS for long-term (2).…”

“…The antiresorptive agents tested to date fail to avoid inflammatory resorption that is followed by ankylosis in dental avulsion cases (6). In a previous study we tested the anti-osteoclastogenesis effects of alendronate, a potent bisphosphonate used for osteoporosis treatment.…”

“…The majority of the replanted teeth have to be extracted within a period of 4-6 years (5). Many antiresorptive agents have been evaluated in vitro and in vivo and have been demonstrated to be either only partially effective or associated with unacceptable side effects (6). Hence, there is a great need for new substances that are effective and biocompatible.…”
