Intracortical surface‐based MR diffusivity to investigate neurologic and psychiatric disorders: a review

Abstract: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) allows the quantification of water diffusivity within the cerebral cortex. Alterations in cortical mean diffusivity (MD) have been suggested to reflect microstructural damage. Interestingly, microstructural changes can be detected in the absence of macrostructural alterations such as cortical thinning or gray matter volume loss. However, volume-based neuroimaging techniques for the study of cortical MD have shown some limitations in terms of intersubject registration, partial vol… Show more

“…Conversely, the GBSS-based framework used in this study provides the advantage of eliminating the requirement for smoothing. Furthermore, concerns were raised regarding the extensive computational time needed for cortical surface reconstruction with Freesurfer, as well as the necessity for rigorous quality control evaluation in surface-based analyzes ( 42 ).…”

“…Atrophy and altered microstructural integrity of the cortex can be captured with MRI outcome measures such as cortical thickness and mean diffusivity (MD), and may be a proxy of underlying neurodegeneration [25]. While PDD and DLB patients show more pronounced cortical atrophy and increased cortical MD compared to cognitively unimpaired elderly [26][27][28][29], PD patients show only subtle changes [30][31][32].…”
