Intraocular pressure, specular microscopy, and prostaglandinE2concentration in dogs with mature and hypermature cataract

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate and correlate intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell density (CD), and hexagonality (HEX), and the aqueous humor prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) concentration in dogs with mature (MG, n = 8) and hypermature (HG, n = 8) cataracts. Eight laboratory beagles with no ocular abnormalities were included as a control group (CG). The IOP was measured using a digital applanation tonometer. Noncontact specular microscopy was used to evaluate CD and HEX. Samples of aqueous humor were used to de… Show more

“…The mean IOP (6.34 ± 0.43 mmHg) in the present study was lower than the values established in other wild rodents . Variations in IOP values may arise from intraocular inflammation, glaucoma, variation in blood pressure, senility, seasonality, circadian rhythm, and the effects of certain drugs . In our study, despite the low IOP values, there were no signs of either eye diseases or altered vision.…”

“…Specular microscopy has become a standard technique to determine endothelial cell density and cell morphology in vivo. The specular microscope has been used to quantify endothelial cell size in humans, dogs, rabbits, horses and other animal species (ABIB; BARRETO, 2001;ANDREW et al, 2001;GWIN et al, 1982;MORITA, 1995;PEIFFER et al, 1981;PIGATTO et al, 2006;RENZO, 2014;STAPLETON;PEIFFER, 1979;SZALAI, 2011). However, most studies do not report the evaluation of the parameters endothelial cells and their relation with aging in birds.…”

“…Used in preoperative evaluation for cataract surgery in humans and animals (RENZO et al, 2014). Among the useful parameters to determine endothelial cell status are the endothelial cell density and cell morphology (SABATER et al, 2013).…”

“…Cataract is defined the opacity of the eye lens, and is considered to be the leading cause of blindness in dogs. The affection can be classified based on the age of onset (congenital, juvenile, or senile), position in the lens (capsular, cortical, nuclear, axial, equatorial, or total), degree and stage of opacification (incipient, immature, mature, or hypermature), and the possible cause (inherited, traumatic, metabolic, or toxic) (Davidson & Nelms 2013, Renzo et al 2014.…”
