Intraspecies variation in nutritive potentials of eggs from two ectotypes of giant African land snail (Archachatina marginata var. saturalis) in Calabar, Nigeria

Abstract: This pilot study provides information on the nutritive potentials of eggs laid by two ectotypes of Archachatina marginata var. saturalis (P) snails. One hundred (100) adult A. marginata snails, 50 each of the black-skinned ectotype and white-skinned ectotype used for the study were selected from the snail sanctuary of the Department of Animal Science, University of Calabar, Nigeria. The snails were raised 5 per hutch and fed fresh pawpaw (Carica papaya) leaves and concentrate. Freshly laid eggs from snails' ma… Show more

“…It is possible that snail eggs might also be of high nutritive value, though it is not consumed by humans in Nigeria at the present. Okon et al (2013) reported that snail eggs are good sources of protein and basic minerals (K + , Na + , Ca ++ , Fe ++ , Mg ++ and *Corresponding author. E-mail: ibomlawrence@gmail.com.…”

“…The snail meat Limicolaria flammea contains 46.65% of proteins essential for strengthening nutritional status of malnourished people (Envin et al, 2018). Also, the nutritional value of the flesh of the snail Limicolaria flammea is reflected in its high content of mineral elements, particularly calcium and phosphorus, which are important for strengthening body bone mass and for tooth formation (Okon et al, 2016). Medicinal value of the snail Limicolaria flammea would be reflected in the use of the flesh and shell.…”

“…Lymnaea stagnalis eggs were approximately 73% protein, 16% lipids, and 11% carbohydrates. Proteins in eggs in the giant African land snail Archachatina marginata were also the most abundant, followed by carbohydrates (Okon et al ). The authors also found high concentrations of ash, sodium, and calcium in eggs.…”
