Green areas and parks are places where people’s quality of life improves, places of recreation and relaxation, in which to carry out various social activities. Among these, the historic gardens represent the union between green areas and historic architecture. Light is considered one of the main factors influencing the perception of such spaces at night; therefore, lighting solutions should be properly balanced. Immersive virtual reality is a tool that allows for lighting design management from different viewpoints. This study investigates how the lighting of a monumental garden affects people’s perception of its architecture at night. With this aim, a detailed 3D model of the western part of Escorial’s monumental complex in Spain was built in DIALux evo 11 and Unreal Engine 4.27 and used to propose six different lighting scenarios. Participants viewed the scenarios through a head-mounted display and provided subjective feedback on the perceived light strength of the environment and architecture. Results highlight that illuminating surrounding areas affects the environment and building perception, as well as the order in which elements capture observer attention. In particular, lit elements between the observer and the façade can reduce façade importance.

Perception of Light in Museum Environments: Comparison between Real-Life and Virtual Visual Experiences

Alternative environments to real-life have been in recent demand in regard to lighting design and in museums. In this study, the effectiveness of the perception of the museum space in simulations or virtual-based environments is studied. Answers to a questionnaire regarding lighting in four different visual experiences are compared: Real-life, virtual-video-based, virtual-photo-based and virtual-render-based. A total of 117 participants were divided into four visual experience groups. Each group answered the same lighting related questions for four exhibition halls in the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa (Italy), which is housed in the Monumental Charterhouse of Calci. The answers were analyzed using ANOVA and a T-test. The results show that virtual experiences can be acceptable alternatives to real-life experience as the answers were indifferent in more than half of the criteria, and no criterion was affected significantly by experience, regardless of the hall’s characteristics. However, it was found that the hall’s characteristics also had an impact on the perception of the criteria in different experiences. Controlled artificial lighting or uniformly distributed lighting (full day or artificial light) were found to be more indifferent to the experience.

Light pollution refers to the result of excessive and incorrectly targeted artificial lighting, which is observed in large cities and is mainly identified by the absence of starry skies. The purpose of this research is the interdisciplinary analysis of the effects of light pollution in various fields such as astronomy, ecology, environment, human health and wellbeing and the interaction between them. As light pollution has become more intense in recent years, the research also aims to explore the awareness of people on the phenomenon and the effect they believe it has on the various sectors affected. To explore the general knowledge of the world’s population regarding light pollution, a questionnaire was created and distributed to people around the world. A significant characteristic of the people involved is that they are not related to the subject or lighting in general. The analysis of the questionnaires provides with results on the correlation between all the above sectors affected by light pollution and recommends strategic solutions regarding its mitigation. Each society must become more conscious on the subject both individually, since each country has a different level of light pollution, but also collectively because it is an international issue that affects the environment. Also, people need to be aware of the problem and participate in the procedures for dealing with it.
