Introducing MOZLEAP: An Integrated Long-Run Scenario Model of the Emerging Energy Sector of Mozambique

Abstract: Since recently Mozambique is actively developing its large reserves of coal, natural gas and hydropower.Against this background, we present in this paper the first integrated long-run scenario model of the Mozambican energy sector. Our model makes use of the LEAP framework and is calibrated on the basis of recently developed local energy statistics, demographic and urbanization trends as well as crosscountry based GDP elasticities for biomass consumption, sector structure and vehicle ownership. We develop four… Show more

“…It analyzed energy demand and pollutant emissions for the Greek road transport sector from 2010 to 2035 (Bitos, n.d.) along with the same sector in Taiwan (Liao et al, 2011). Also, it calculated aggregate trends in energy supply and demand due to the anticipated explosion in natural resource exploitation in Mozambique (Mahumane and Mulder, 2016). LEAP modeled CO 2 released from the energy and cement industries in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province from 2009 to 2050 (Liu et al, 2011).…”

“…Emergence of a gas-fired economy In Mozambique, a series of recent natural gas discoveries in the Rovuma basin radically changed the country's resource endowment 1 and their monetization through liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports is expected to make the country a large energy exporter (Mahumane and Mulder, 2016) and to move the economy away from a low-development trap (Melina and Xiong, 2013;IMF, 2016). Yet, LNG exports alone cannot solve all the country's development problems as they promise few permanent jobs and generate little forward and backward linkages à la Hirschman (1958) with the rest of the economy.…”
