The Emergence of Non-Energy Uses of Coal and the Future of Lignite Mining in a Region of Low Carbon Footprint, a Case Study

The rapid development of renewable energy sources, which has been going on for the last two decades, allows now the elimination of the coal use for power generation. Nevertheless, coal will continue to be used in key-industrial sectors, such as steel and cement production, which are crucial for maintaining the living standards of modern society. The future remains doubtful for coals of poor quality characteristics, such as lignite, which is used almost exclusively for power generation purposes. The present study aims to show that, even in the case of lignite, the transition to a zero-carbon economy must be decoupled from the mines closure. In this context, a combined SWOT–AHP analysis was conducted in order to compare seven potential non-energy uses of the lignite produced in the mines of Western Macedonia region, based on six criteria that are in line with the framework set by the European Union for the selection of the best technologies for every site-specific case. This comparison showed that the most promising technologies are related to the production of organic fertilizers and soil amendments, raw materials and products for the construction industry, activated carbon, and graphene. These technologies may contribute to the achievement of socioeconomic and environmental targets that are critical for the just transition of Western Macedonia region to a new, sustainable productive model.

PT. X is a quartz sand mining company located in Riau Islands. PT. X has a mine life of 5 years, starting in the first year of 2023 until the last year of 2027. Mining activities have a negative impact on the environment, therefore reclamation activities are carried out at the production operation stage. The purpose of this study is to determine the area of land to be reclaimed, techniques and equipment to be used in reclamation, land stewardship, revegetation, maintenance, and reclamation costs. This research uses the actual calculation method this method has 4 stages, namely the preparation stage, the data collection stage, the research stage in the field, and the stage of preparing the final report. At the data collection stage using primary and secondary data owned by PT.X. Reclamation of the production operation stage carried out by PT. X uses Hybrid Coconut plants. Hybrid coconut will be reclaimed on former mining land during the life of the mine whose work process is carried out in tandem with quartz sand mining activities. The reclamation cost plan of PT. X consists of direct costs and indirect costs. The total cost plan of reclamation of PT. X amounted to Rp. 583,799,620.00.

The foundry industry is responsible for the production of several potentially polluting and hazardous compounds. One of the major sources of pollution is the use of organic binders for the manufacturing of sand cores and sand moulds. To address this problem, in recent years, the use of low-emission products, known as inorganic binders, has been proposed. Their use in ferrous foundries, otherwise, is limited due to some problematic features that complicate their introduction in the manufacturing process, as often happens when a breakthrough innovation is introduced. In light of this, the aim of this work is to provide a Green Innovation Practice (GIP) to manage the introduction of green breakthrough innovations, as previously described, within an existing productive context. This practice was applied to better manage the experimental phase of the Green Casting Life Project, which aims to evaluate the possibility of using inorganic binders for the production of ferrous castings. After describing the state of the art of GIPs and their application in manufacturing contexts, the paper described the proposed GIP and its application to a real case consisting of testing inorganic binders in a ferrous foundry.
