Introducing the Open Affective Standardized Image Set (OASIS)

Abstract: We introduce the Open Affective Standardized Image Set (OASIS), an open-access online stimulus set containing 900 color images depicting a broad spectrum of themes, including humans, animals, objects, and scenes, along with normative ratings on two affective dimensions-valence (i.e., the degree of positive or negative affective response that the image evokes) and arousal (i.e., the intensity of the affective response that the image evokes). The OASIS images were collected from online sources, and valence and a… Show more

“…Each trial consisted of the following events: 1) white screen with black central fixation cross (800ms); 2) neutralising or descriptive framing sentence, which remained on screen until response was made); 3) IAPS image (neg or neu; 4000ms); 4) white screen with centrally presented rating scale (1-9, remained on screen until response was made); 5) white screen with black central fixation cross (1000ms). The image shown above was selected from the OASIS images set (Kurdi, Lozano, & Banji, 2017) as a representative example and was not one of those used in the task.…”

“…Russell developed a model of affect that is used to map affective states to a two dimensional chart using ratings of valence and arousal [69]. This model has been used in an array of applications, including affective classification of blog posts [70] and images with affective ratings of valence and arousal [71,72]. This portends a stark contrast between the approach used by psycologists and roboticists in labeling stimuli.…”

“…Of these, the most well known and well characterized is the International Affective Picture System (IAPS; Lang, Bradley, & Cuthbert, 2008), which includes images that vary along the dimensions of valence and arousal and span most of the affective space. More recently, the Open Affective Standardized Image Set (OASIS; Kurdi, Lozano, & Banaji, 2017) was introduced as a more current alternative to the IAPS. Both sets include social and nonsocial stimuli, although they are not balanced across affect dimensions.…”
