Distinctive features of the on‐demand work platforms made it theoretically improbable for workers to organize and for collective forms of protest to emerge. Their business model and work arrangements spatially isolate and socially individualize workers, subjectivizing them as competing micro‐enterprises rather than co‐workers. However, faced with the flood of the platforms on a global scale, collective actions of platform workers surged like a backwash, especially in the ride‐hailing and food delivery sectors, during the last decade. Observers witnessed a great variety in the combination of actors involved and repertoire of actions mobilized worldwide. Despite this diversity, some common global trends can be sketched out. Through a literature review focused on Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia, this article shows that workers struggle globally to build a collective actor, through an original combination of new and old forms of protest. They ought to compensate for their weak marketplace bargaining power by leveraging their discursive, associational, coalitional and workplace bargaining powers.

El comercio electrónico se aceleró durante la pandemia, a medida que más consumidores compraban en línea. Empresas como Amazon y MercadoLibre se transformaron en líderes mundiales, convirtiendo la actividad logística en un pilar fundamental para el desarrollo de su negocio, mientras que la gestión de sus relaciones laborales ha sido objeto de debate. Este artículo estudia esa dinámica en perspectiva comparada, observando el papel de los modelos de regulación de las condiciones laborales y posibilidades de organización colectiva de los trabajadores de la actividad logística de Amazon (en Alemania y los Estados Unidos) y de MercadoLibre (en la Argentina). Los resultados indican que la dinámica de las relaciones laborales de estas compañías responde tanto a las particularidades del modelo de regulación vigente en cada país, como a las posibilidades de organización y correlación de fuerzas de los actores intervinientes.

Platform Work as a Source of Satisfaction – Its Merits and Demerits in the Opinion of Poles

Goal – the article aims to identify the characteristics of platform work (PW) as a potential source of satisfaction, based on the opinions of adult Poles. It draws on the approaches to job satisfaction derived from neoclassical economics and psychological concepts of work. Research methodology – the characteristics of PW were compiled through the review of extant literature. The opinions were collected in a diagnostic survey using an online questionnaire filled and returned by a representative sample of 3165 Poles. The survey identified a group declaring to have the knowledge of platform-mediated work opportunities, which ultimately contained 2099 respondents. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this was the first survey in Poland on the perception of the characteristics of work mediated through digital platforms conducted on such a large scale. Score/results – the study showed that major benefits of PW relate to contractor autonomy and concern the freedom of choice when and how long to work. The most frequently identified demerit, on the other hand, concerns work remuneration and it is the instability of income. Originality/value – the originality of the study stems from the quantitative representation of the opinions concerning the characteristics of platform-mediated work, divided into merits and demerits classified under three categories: labour income, contractor autonomy, and working conditions.
