Thousands of people have lost their lives in stampedes and other crowd related disasters in recent years. Most of these fatalities seem to have been caused by poor control and management of crowds, which is discussed in this article. An efficient and effective crowd management system must also have a plan to deal with the ongoing threat of terrorism and outbreak of various kinds of communicable diseases. In this article, we present a framework of a Crowd Control and Health Management System specially designed to prevent and manage stampedes and other disasters. The system has two subsystems; one for dealing with the management of stampedes and other disasters and the other with healthcare management. As part of the proposed system, an algorithm for an early detection of stampedes, with proof and simulation of implementation, is provided. As part of the healthcare management subsystem, we integrate several mobile applications and develop four of them dealing with relief issues, blood donations, complaints and alerts, and utilizing mobile phones as a sensor device. Our system makes use of various kinds of wireless, mobile, and other technologies and tools including Fog Computing, Smart Phones, Smart Digital Street, IP-Cameras, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Voice Alarm, Light Alarm, and Global Positioning System (GPS). We compare merits and effectiveness of RFID and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), as well as those of Cloud and Fog with a view of using them as part of the proposed framework. We also discuss applications of our systems in real-life cases of Hajj, an annual pilgrimage of millions of people to Mecca, and Kumbh Mela, a periodic gathering of tens of millions of people in India, both of which have accounted for the majority of fatalities in stampedes and other disasters.

The implementation of efficient security mechanisms for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system has always been a continuous challenge due to its limited computing resources. Previously, hash-based, symmetric-key cryptography-based and elliptic curve cryptography based security protocols were proposed for RFID system. However, these protocols are not suitable because some of them failed to fulfil the RFID security requirements, and some of them produce high computational overhead. Recently researchers have focused on developing an efficient security mechanism based on Hyper Elliptic Curve Cryptography (HECC) which provides high security with 80 bits lower-key size. In this paper, we propose an efficient RFID authentication scheme (RFID-AS) based on hyperelliptic curve Signcryption. The proposed RFID-AS provides the required security features for the RFID system as well as security from potential attacks. We validated the security of proposed RFID-AS by using formal security analysis techniques, such as the Real-Or-Random (ROR) model and Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA). Furthermore, the results reveal that the computational, communication and storage overheads of the proposed RFID-AS is much less than the other recently proposed schemes. Compared to the most recently published work based on ECC Signcryption, our scheme is 70% efficient in terms of computational overhead, 42.7% efficient in terms of communication overhead, and 57.7% efficient in terms of storage overhead. Therefore, the proposed RFID-AS is more efficient as compared to the recently published work in this domain. Hence, it is an attractive solution for resource-limited devices like RFID tags.

Providing security has been always on priority in all areas of computing and communication, and for the systems that are low on computing power, implementing appropriate and efficient security mechanism has been a continuous challenge for the researchers. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system is such an environment, which requires the design and implementation of efficient security mechanism. Earlier, the security protocols for RFID based on hash functions and symmetric key cryptography have been proposed. But, due to high strength and requirement of less key size in elliptic curve cryptography, the focus of researchers has been on designing efficient security protocol for RFID based on elliptic curves. In this paper, an efficient elliptic curve signcryption based security protocol for RFID has been proposed, which provides mutual authentication, confidentiality, non-repudiation, integrity, availability, forward security, anonymity, and scalability. Moreover, the proposed protocol successfully provides resistance from replay attack, impersonation attack, location tracking attack, de-synchronization attack, denial of service attack, man-in-the-middle attack, cloning attack, and key-compromise attack. Results have revealed that the proposed protocol is efficient than the other related protocols as it takes less computational time and storage cost, especially for the tag, making it ideal to be used for RFID systems.
