“…Sometimes, a lower price can be associated with lower quality because decreasing the price is a marketing strategy some supermarkets use to sell meat close to the sell-by date (Schnettler et al, 2008). Although the intensification of animal production in most farms is increasingly common (Clark et al, 2019), traditional production can still be found in some countries, mainly J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f Journal Pre-proof related to autochthonous breeds (Čandek-Potokar et al, 2019). For instance, Spain is the fourth largest pig producing country worldwide, the 2 nd largest in Europe (MAPA, 2019).Spain has developed an export-oriented pork industry that is heavily concentrated.…”

“…Local breeds also exhibit a lower potential for growth and protein deposition than modern pig breeds [12,13] and are therefore less attractive to breeders. However, the awareness of the importance of biodiversity and the adverse side effects of intensive production systems in the last few decades has led to the increased interest in the breeding of local pig breeds [14]. Growth performance of twenty European local pig breeds has recently been reviewed [15] and the study demonstrated that there is a lack of knowledge about their growth potential and their nutritional requirements that could otherwise be used to optimize the management of these breeds.…”

“…Applied research activities focused on the sustainable conservation of animal genetic resources have been recently focused on the characterisation of European autochthonous pig breeds including phenotypic and genotypic descriptions of local populations, starting from small groups of pigs that might be representative of the whole breed populations [ 9 , 10 , 15 , 20 , 23 , 24 ]. As far as we know, however, no specific attempts have been addressed to obtain a complete characterisation of a whole pig breed, in order to establish an efficient and direct monitoring approach that might be able to better implement conservation activities.…”
