Intussusception in adults: a retrospective study

Abstract: The features of intussusception may be nonspecific and the diagnosis is often made only during laparotomy. An identifiable organic lesion is present in most cases. En bloc resection is recommended for ileocaecal and colocolic intussusception.

“…Even then, preoperative diagnosis rates still varies from 50% to 90% according to the literature [5,6]. Due to the high probability of malignancy as the cause of intestinal intussusception in adults, surgical resection is often viewed as the treatment of choice [6,7]. Preoperative reduction is not often performed because of theoretical risks such as intraluminal seeding/venous tumor dissemination, perforation and perceived increased risk of anastomotic complications in case surgery is required [2].…”

“…In the large intestine, 36% of malignant cases have been identified 8 . This condition is rare in adults, remains a diagnostic challenge for most surgeons, especially for presenting wide range of symptoms, chronic symptoms often predominate 2,4,5,6,8,9 . In all series abdominal pain was the most common symptom, followed by nonspecific symptoms with nausea, vomiting, constipation and fever.…”
