Abstract:We measured neuronal cell structure and connectivity from fly and zebrafish to mouse and human and discovered an invariant feature: an average of one synapse for every micrometer of dendritic cable. We provide evidence of how this pattern emerges from precise spatial positioning, electrical activity, and resource conservation in neurons. Our results imply that nervous systems converged onto synaptic density invariance to stabilise neuronal responses, suggesting a simplifying principle for neural circuit functi… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
