Invasiveness, ecological impacts and control of acacias in southwestern Europe – a review

Abstract: Abstract. The most prolific acacias in southern Europe (Acacia dealbata, A. melanoxylon and A. longifolia) are rapidly spreading in its westernmost area: Portugal and NW Spain, where congeners with invasion potential are already established. We performed a bibliographic search of acacia invasions in southern Europe and used spatial data on acacia distribution and abiotic parameters in Iberia to check the influence of abiotic factors on acacia invasion. According to our results, in Iberia A. dealbata an… Show more

“…These are linked to climate change and habitat destruction, including urbanization, forest fires, land-use alterations, invasive species forming very thick stands, and changing the leaf litter composition and decomposition rate (e.g., Acacia spp.) [ 55 ]. It is important to note that vast areas of otherwise suitable habitat have been reclaimed for urbanization or agriculture.…”

“…As it is a species with a pioneer behavior, similar to Mediterranean heliophilous shrubs, whenever there is a clearing or an area without vegetation, it finds an opportunity to sprout and develop [38]. The factors that seem to be most unfavorable for its expansion are: neutral-basic soils (pH > 5.5), occurrence of frequent frosts (>21 to 40 days per year) and low annual precipitation (<500 mm) [39].…”

“…Many Australian Acacia species are aggressive invaders outside their native range, including in many southern European countries (Lorenzo et al., 2010; Vieites‐Blanco & González‐Prieto, 2020). In Portugal, Acacia species (mostly Acacia dealbata , Acacia melanoxylon , and Acacia longifolia ) covered >17,000 ha in 2015, but the invaded area continues to increase as a result of wildfires and land abandonment in rural areas (Ferreira et al., 2021).…”
