Investigating an author's influence using citation analyses: Christopher alexander (1964–2014)

Abstract: Citation analyses are used to investigate the influence of architect Christopher Alexander over the period of 1964-2014. Alexander's work has been so influential that he has been cited by nearly 2000 source items in the Web of Science Core Collection, by Thomson Reuters. Alexander's work has had a profound interdisciplinary reach. Citation analyses reveal that scholars in computing disciplines have cited Alexander's work more than scholars in any other discipline including architecture. Alexander's most cited … Show more

“…This was essentially the question asked by architect Christopher Alexander (who is best known in computing for originating the concept of design patterns [64]) when he led the development of the University of Oregon's master plan in the early 1970s. In that project, Alexander and his colleagues created a master plan that was not a map of the future but rather a philosophy and set of patterns for how the campus should adapt over time.…”

“…This vision is based on the philosophy of architect and design theorist Christopher Alexander, particularly as expressed in his master plan for the University of Oregon's campus [2]. Alexander is best known in HCI for his work on design patterns [64], but his larger project was certainly resonant with the goals of humanity-centered design [29].…”

“…But we find it rather odd that the present-day effort to design virtual worlds so far neglects design patterns, despite their potential central role in shaping all types of environments. Design patterns tend to be used simply as a communicative tool in software engineering and interface design [61] rather than for their deeper purpose (in Alexander's estimation) of creating a living structure.…”

“…Despite a large body of literature on or inspired by Alexander's work [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12], living structure has not yet been well recognized as a physical phenomenon or mathematical concept, for people to understand the objective or structural nature of beauty. This paper is an attempt to fill this gap, by setting up a dialogue with those who are skeptical about Alexander's design thoughts.…”
