Investigating Holocene mountain glaciations: a plea for the supremacy of glacial geomorphology when reconstructing glacier chronologies

Abstract: Investigating Holocene glacier chronologies constitutes a valuable approach within palaeoclimatic research. Recent progress of numerical dating techniques, in particular terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating (TCND), has given it new momentum. Highly increased precision and improved methodological procedures of data calibration seem, however, to have gradually pushed previous rigorous geomorphological analysis of the investigated glacier forelands aside. By using a well-known key site in the Southern Alps/New Z… Show more

“…T A B L E 1 Geomorphic disturbance intensity classification based on process magnitude and frequency following Eichel et al (2016) with indicative landforms/field observations. To assign a maximum terrain age to each plot, we used dated moraines in Mueller glacier foreland (Winkler, 2004(Winkler, , 2018, a glacier position map (Tscherrig, 1965; see Figure 1b), and aerial imagery in Turtmann glacier foreland.…”

“…Interpretation of exposure ages requires conformity with independent field evidence and the calculation of a mean age from all data may not be justified in all cases, as has been discussed in detail for moraine dating (cf. Ivy-Ochs et al 2007;Winkler 2018). The Bonaduz formation sediments, which overlie Tamins deposits, were deposited as a consequence of the Flims rock avalanche.…”

“…The establishment of such a chronological framework first requires detailed geomorphological investigations. This step is important, as careful geomorphological analyses are often overlooked when establishing glacier chronologies (Winkler, 2018). As high-resolution remote sensing data have hitherto not been used in this context, glacial landforms at key sites in the southern Black Forest were mapped by utilising these data and performing geomorphological field mapping.…”
