Investigation of Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Microwave-Assisted Extraction and Efficient Recovery of Natural Products

Abstract: A systematic study of the principles of deep eutectic solvent-based microwave-assisted extraction (DES-MAE) was performed. It was found that the heating rates of most DESs decreased (heat capacity increased) under microwave irradiation with increasing water content, allowing high-efficiency extraction for thermally sensitive compounds. In addition, DESs containing carboxylic acids reacted with hydroxyl groups of sugar and choline chloride, resulting in cell wall destruction and inhibition of cellulose, hemicel… Show more

“…On the other hand, the increase of hydroxyl groups makes it easier for alcohols to form intramolecular hydrogen bonds rather than intermolecular hydrogen bonds with choline chloride. The viscosity of the liquid was the measurement of its internal flow resistance, which reflects the intensity of the interaction between molecules in the liquid, and the tiny viscosity make NADES better penetrate the voids in the matrix [29]. The high viscosity of NADESs was mainly due to the formation of hydrogen bond network between HBAs and HBDs.…”

“…In comparison to ionic liquids, DESs are cheaper and easier to produce. Due to those and a variety of other favorable properties such as nontoxicity, biocompatibility, high thermal stability, low vapor pressure, they are getting increased attention in many areas of science and technology including various extraction techniques [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…DESs meet the requirements for both MAE and HS-GC -they have a negligible vapor pressure desirable for HS-GC [15] and high polarity [9,16]; thus are able to absorb microwave energy with great efficiency. Considering this, DESs seem to be very promising for MAE as for HS-GC.…”
