An attempt was conducted taking three wheat varieties (BARI gom-24, Shatabdi, Bijoy) to investigate the application and suitability of single-stage fluidized bed drying for quality wheat seeds in terms of germination percentage. Drying of wheat seed was conducted in a fluidized bed dryer at three temperatures of 35°C, 40°C, and 45°C at a constant bed thickness of 13 cm and 4.5 m/s of air velocity. Total drying time required for drying of each variety 210 min (3.5hr), 150 min (2.5hr) and 80 min (1.3hr) at temperature 35°C, 40°C, and 45°C respectively for reduction of moisture from 16.98±0.15% to 12±0.1% wb. In contrast, sun drying (33±2°C) took 270 min (4.5 hr). It was shown, the drying time required in the fluidized bed drying method was almost 22-71% shorter than the sun drying method. The germination percentage was 94.67%, 97.33%, 88% for the variety “BARI gom-24” 93.67%, 97%, and 91.33% for the variety Shatabdi and 95%, 96.67%, 89.67% for the variety Bijoy while dried in a fluidized bed dryer at temperature 35°C, 40°C, and 45°C respectively. The germination percentage of sun-dried samples was 90.67% (BARI gom-24), 92.33%. (Shatabdi) and 92% (Bijoy). In the comparison of germination, wheat seed samples dried in the fluidized bed dryer at 35°C, 40°C showed a higher germination percentage than sun drying wheat seed samples. Therefore, the proposed drying technique does not only facilitate faster removal of moisture content, and also a higher germination percentage was found than the existing sun drying method. So, fluidized bed drying can be effective for wheat seeds in Bangladesh.

Current research is considered to study the effect of nonthermal physical field technologies of atmospheric cold plasma (CP) and ultrasound waves (US) on the germination and seedling indices of cumin seeds. In this regard, different drying strategies were planned in a single and combined form using a lab-scale cold plasma unit and ultrasound-assisted air dryer. Various duration of CP pretreatment (CPt: 0, 15, and 30 s), ultrasound power (P: 0, 60, 120, and 180 W), and air temperature (T: 30, 35, and 40 C) were practiced to investigate the changes in germination traits and microstructure characteristics of cumin seeds. It was found that CP pretreatment and ultrasound treatment in a single form significantly increased germination percentage, germination index, and germination rate as well as seeding vigor of cumin seeds. The morphological alteration in the surface of the seeds, which modifies the seed surface hydrophilicity and accelerates water uptake, may be the leading cause of CP and USinduced modification in the germination power. The highest stimulatory effect belonged to the combined application of cold plasma and ultrasound wave when the cumin seeds were treated with an appropriate CP dose and ultrasound energy. So that, the maximum germination percentage (92%), germination index (14.91), and germination rate (21.33%), as well as the highest values of seedling vigor index I (178.67 mm) and vigor index II (420.72 mg), were in possession of pretreatment with CPt: 15 s before ultrasound-assisted drying at T ≤ 35 C and P ≤ 120 W. Practical ApplicationsThis study demonstrates the potential of cold plasma and ultrasound wave before and during air drying of cumin seeds, respectively. Cold plasma was used as a nonthermal and nonchemical pretreatment strategy before air drying of cumin seeds in ultrasoundassisted dryer. A single application of cold plasma caused a significant increase in germination percentage, germination index, and germination rate of cumin seeds. The positive effect of cold plasma on the studied parameter of cumin seeds intensified when it was supported by airborne low-power ultrasound waves during air drying.

The design of specific drying equipment requires correct knowledge of kinetic and thermodynamic characteristics of agricultural products. The purpose of this research is to find a suitable mathematical model to describe the experimental drying process, obtain the activation energy to specify the thermodynamic properties and calculate the specificity energy consumption. Bitter melons were dried in an infrared dryer with different temperatures, ultrasonic pretreatment times, and diverse distances from infrared lamps to reach moisture 0.1 kgw.kgd−1. The Midilli's model, best model to describe the drying process of bitter melon was chosen. The effective diffusion coefficient of bitter melon increased from 1.14 × 10−8 to 3.60 × 10−8 m2.s−1 with increasing drying temperature and duration of ultrasound treatment and decreasing the distance from infrared lamps. Also, Specific energy consumption decreased from 161.96 to 303.57 kWh.kg−1 by increasing the temperature and duration of ultrasound pretreatment and reducing the distance of infrared lamps.Practical applicationsReducing moisture through mass and heat transfer is necessary to maintain the quality and shelf life and reduce the waste of medicinal plants and food materials. The controlled and scientific drying of bitter melon is of utmost importance due to the sensitivity of its effective constituents to the application of heat during the drying process. The utilization of mathematical modeling to conduct theoretical research offers a robust and expeditious means of evaluating the phenomena of mass and heat transfer in the context of natural drying conditions. In order to ensure quality control, a thorough investigation of the product's drying procedure and reducing energy consumption is imperative. The findings of this investigation are applicable to the enhancement of drying processes within the medicinal plant drying sector.
