Investigation on Dynamic Calibration for an Optical-Fiber Solids Concentration Probe in Gas-Solid Two-Phase Flows

Abstract: This paper presents a review and analysis of the research that has been carried out on dynamic calibration for optical-fiber solids concentration probes. An introduction to the optical-fiber solids concentration probe was given. Different calibration methods of optical-fiber solids concentration probes reported in the literature were reviewed. In addition, a reflection-type optical-fiber solids concentration probe was uniquely calibrated at nearly full range of the solids concentration from 0 to packed bed con… Show more

“…Among the many techniques that have been adopted to measure local solids concentrations, optical fibre probes have received particular attention owing to their simplicity, fast response, high sensitivity, relatively low cost, and minimal undesirable effects on the accuracy of local solids concentration measurements despite being invasive. [ 1–3 ] Two main arrangements of optical fibre probes are transmission and reflection type probes. While the former is established on forward light scattering between illuminating and reflecting fibres separated by a horizontal gap, the latter is based on backscattering to an optical fibre system with illuminating and reflecting fibres intermingled or arranged in rows, parallel or crossed.…”

“…While the former is established on forward light scattering between illuminating and reflecting fibres separated by a horizontal gap, the latter is based on backscattering to an optical fibre system with illuminating and reflecting fibres intermingled or arranged in rows, parallel or crossed. [ 1,3 ] Here we mainly focus on the backscattering design that is less intrusive and can perform measurements over the entire range of solids concentrations, from extremely dilute flows to the fixed bed state. “…In the present issue, both fundamental aspects [ 3 , 9 , 10 , 12 , 17 ] and technical applications [ 1 , 16 , 18 ] of optomechatronics are covered. For example, an optical measurement system for the detection of mechanical quantities (surface structure, roughness, vibration, rotation, etc. )…”
