Long‐aliphatic‐segment polyamides were prepared based on hexamethylenediamine and α,ω‐(CH2)x biosynthetic diacids (x = 10, 11, 12). The pertinent monomers (salts) were isolated as solids, thoroughly characterized for the first time, and then submitted to an anhydrous melt prepolymerization technique. The obtained prepolymers exhibited $\overline {M} _{{\rm n}} $ in the range of 5 100–11 800 g · mol−1, and the molecular weight was further increased by up to 55% through solid‐state finishing. The suggested overall polyamidation cycle was conducted at short melt‐reaction times, so as to avoid any thermal degradation, and was proved efficient, indicating similar reactants polymerizability independently of the methylene content.magnified image

Abstract.A novel engineering plastic, poly(decamethylene 2,6-naphthalamide) (PA10N) was prepared via a reaction of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid and 1,10-decanediamine. The structure of synthesized PA10N was characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR). The thermal behavior was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Melting temperature (Tm), glass transition temperature (Tg) and decomposition temperature (Td) of PA10N are 320, 144 and 495°C, respectively. The solubility, water-absorbing capacity, and mechanical properties of PA10N have also been investigated. Pyrolysis products and thermal decomposition mechanism of PA10N were analyzed by flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The results show that the heat resistance and mechanical properties of PA10N are near to those of poly(nonamethylene terephthalamide) (PA9T), and PA10N is a promising heat-resistant and processable engineering plastic.

A lot of attention is currently being paid to the transition to a biobased economy. In this movement, most efforts concentrate on the development of bioenergy applications including bioethanol, biodiesel, thermochemical conversion of biomass, and others. However, in the energy sector other nonbiomass alternatives are known, whereas no valuable alternatives are available when thinking about chemical building blocks. Therefore, it is also essential to develop new routes for the synthesis of bio-based chemicals and materials derived thereof. Such intermediates can originate either from plants or from animals. Castor oil is a non-edible oil extracted from the seeds of the castor bean plant Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae), which grows in tropical and subtropical areas. Globally, around one million tons of castor seeds are produced every year, the leading producing areas being India, PR China, and Brazil.2 10-Undecenoic acid or undecylenic acid is a fatty acid derived from castor oil that, owing to its bifunctional nature, has many possibilities to develop sustainable applications.
