Investigation on Preparation Process and Storage Stability of Modified Asphalt Binder by Grafting Activated Crumb Rubber

Abstract: According to the theory of molecular design, crumb rubber was grafting activated with acrylamide and then used as asphalt binder modifier. An orthogonal three-factor, three-level test was designed to optimize the preparation process of modified asphalt. Softening point, viscosity, rutting factor, ductility, stiffness modulus and creep speed index were selected as evaluation indicators to study the effects of rubber content, shear time and shear temperature by variance analysis and range analysis. The results s… Show more

“…Independently of modification time, the obtained asphalts exhibited resistance to aging. Such properties are particularly important from the point of view of storage and distribution [29]. The results of the studies of their storage stabilities are presented in Figure 3 and The values of the penetration index (PI) are also very promising.…”

“…Based on our previous research on optimization of the preparation technology [ 33 ], rubber-modified asphalt binder in this study was prepared as follows: 90 # base asphalt binder was heated to 140–160 °C and maintained for 1 h in an oven, and then crumb rubber was added. The mixture was stirred for 20 min manually and then sheared with high-speed shear instrument at 180 °C for 1 h. Unactivated rubber powder, coating-activated rubber powder and grafting-activated rubber powder were used as asphalt binder modifier, respectively, and the content was 20%.…”

“…According to previous studies [36,37], the complex shear modulus seemed to be a more reliable parameter to investigate the component variation of test binders. Therefore, the separation index (SI, Equation (2)) was proposed based on the complex modulus results by strategic highway research program (SHRP).…”
