Investigation on the association between atopic dermatitis and the development of mycosis fungoides in dogs: a retrospective case‐control study

Abstract: In human medicine, the relationship between the immunodysregulation observed in atopic dermatitis (AD) and the development of mycosis fungoides (MF) has triggered considerable interest due to the increasing number of patients with MF who have a previous history of AD. The purpose of this retrospective case-control study was to investigate whether dogs diagnosed with MF were more likely to have AD. The records of 96 000 canine patients at the University of Florida were searched. Inclusion criteria were a clinic… Show more

“…However, this hypothesis is not supported by recent studies. 19,20 A history of chronic dermatitis before the development of CETL has also been proposed in dogs, [21][22][23] but a recent study of 25 cases of canine CETL did not report prior chronic dermatitis in any patient. 2 For the historical feline cases, 5-10 the median time between the onset of first lesions until the final diagnosis of CETL was 3.5 months (range 2.5-10 months, n = 4).…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Other factors related to environmental effects have also been implicated, including exposure to herbicides and other chemicals, [9][10][11][12] residing in an industrial area 9,13,14 and exposure to strong magnetic fields. 15 There is further evidence for increased risk associated with a history of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, 16 atopic dermatitis 17 and gammaherpesvirus infections. 18 Breed predisposition indicates a potential genetic component for the risk of developing disease.…”

“…1,2 The number of mycosis fungoides cases with a history of atopic dermatitis has increased in the last decade. 5 The mechanisms for this association have not been elucidated. Factors that are common in both illnesses include the crucial role of CD4+ T-cells, an analogue cytokine background, the potential role of immunoglobulin E antibodies, and persistent antigenic stimulation by bacteria that may modify T-cell functionality, resulting in proliferation and malignant transformation.…”
