Involvement of Sensory Input from Anterior Teeth in Deglutitive Tongue Function

Abstract: Swallowing is a reflex that receives sensory information from the peripheral nerves and from the cerebral cortex. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the sensory input from anterior teeth affects the functional characteristics of tongue pressure applied against the hard palate during swallowing. Subjects were eight healthy volunteers. Tongue pressure against the hard palate during swallowing 10 ml of water was measured under two conditions: preanesthesia and postanesthesia of anterior teeth… Show more

“…This tendency may be related to the sensitivity of their front teeth. 20) On the contrary, their lesser lip motion may result from sensitivity of the lips. 21) It has been reported that children with PDD have a variety of sensory disorders.…”

“…As the mashed consistency had higher density, there was also higher acoustic impedance (resistance to the passage of acoustic energy). Thus, the ultrasound waves find greater resistance to refraction in the mashed consistency rather than in the liquid one, changing the formation of the ultrasound image (26) . It should be noted that although there is an advantage in the interpretation of the US image in liquid consistency in comparison to the mashed one, it does not mean that the images in the last condition are any less reliable.…”
