Iodine Quantification to Distinguish Clear Cell from Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma at Dual-Energy Multidetector CT: A Multireader Diagnostic Performance Study

Abstract: Dual-energy multidetector CT with iodine quantification can be used to distinguish between clear cell and papillary RCC renal cell carcinoma , and it provides insights regarding the tumor grade.

“…Besides these characteristics observed in our sample, several elaborate imaging-based methods were previously suggested for preoperative pRCC verification. Mileto et al [16] defined a tumour iodine concentration of 0.9 mg/ml as the optimal threshold for discrimination between clear cell and pRCC on CT imaging. Sevcenco et al [17] also noted that diffusion-weighted imaging seems to help distinguish between papillary and other subtypes of RCCs, especially in small renal masses.…”

“…The interaction of these two x-ray beams with body tissues can help in material identification and quantification [18]. These two CT datasets at a low or high polychromatic peak tube energy (kilovoltage, or kV) provide material-specific information that allows for additional characterization of the kidneys and urinary tract [20]. The two varying energy levels can enhance or mute the conspicuity of IV contrast.…”
