Ion Transport Study in Corn Starch-NaHSO3 Based Polymer Electrolytes

Abstract: In this work, different amounts of sodium bisulfite, NaHSO3 (5wt.% to 40wt.%), were dissolved in a corn starch polymer host to synthesize solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) using a solution casting technique. Then, the films prepared were characterised using non-destructive electrical impedance spectroscopy to determine SPE films' conductivity and electrical transport properties. The highest conductivity of the sample at ambient temperature was recorded at 15wt. % of NaHSO3 with a value of 2.22 × 10-4 Scm-1. More… Show more

“…The manufacture of SPE in this study was carried out by the solution casting method [2,4], Fly ash was added as a filler referring to the journal in the manufacture of electrolyte polymers which made the ionic conductivity of the spe more better [1,2]. The homogeneous solution is heated to evaporate the solution and make a solid electrolyte polymer.…”

“…This simple PE exhibited the highest conductivity at 1.72 × 10 −5 S•cm −1 for a weight ratio of 70:30 for CS:NaCl. In 2021, Awang et al [79] studied the impact of adding sodium bisulfite, NaHSO 3 , to cornstarch. The maximum observed conductivity was 2.22 × 10 −4 S•cm −1 at room temperature.…”

“…Different weight percentage (10,20,30,40,50,60,70) of NH4I are added and allowed to stair for 2-4 h until homogenous solution is formed. Further ionic liquid (IL) of different weight percentage (2,4,6,8,10,12,14) is added into the highest conducting corn starch NH4I biopolymer electrolyte as plasticizer. The solution is than poured into polypropylene Petri dish and allowed to dry until solid state free-standing films are achieved.…”

“…Although salt doped BPE has many advantageous properties, yet due to the existence of albeit low ionic conductivity (10 À5 S/cm) still remains the main barrier within these electrolytes for application in electrochemical devices, where one potentially expects two to three order more ionic conductivity (10 À3 -10 À4 S/ cm). [4][5][6][7][8] Most of the biopolymers have many remarkable characteristics such as; water solubility, abundant in nature, biodegradable, non-toxic and economical. Other remarkable properties are thermal adhesion, good solubility, super biocompatibility with other materials.…”
