Ionic Liquid-in-Oil Microemulsions

Abstract: Phase stability and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data show that surfactant-stabilized nanodomains of a typical ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmim][BF4]) may be dispersed by the nonionic surfactant Triton-X100 in cyclohexane. Analyses of these SANS data are consistent with the formation of ionic liquid-in-oil microemulsion droplets.

“…MEs are thermodynamically stable isotropic mixtures of polar, nonpolar, and amphiphilic phase, which provide unique advantages like nanosized aggregates, pharmacodynamic stability, enhanced drug solubilization, and ease of preparation (10,11). Depending on the polarity, ILs can be employed to prepare ionic liquid in oil (IL/ o) (12,13) or ionic liquid in water (14,15) type of MEs.…”

“…28 Smallangle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to investigate the [bmim] [BF 4 ]/Triton X-100/cyclohexane microemulsion, and a swelling behavior consistent with water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions was observed. 10 In addition, Seth and co-workers published a series of reports on solvent and rotational relaxation of coumarin fluorescence probes in various IL-containing microemulsions or micellar solutions. 29,30 The self-assembled structures of surfactants with ILs have shown different advantages over the traditional ones notably in the preparation of nanostructures.…”
