Ionic Liquid-Nanostructured Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)

Abstract: Here, ionic liquids (ILs) based on imidazolium and ammonium cations were used as modifying agents for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by extrusion. The effects of the chemical nature of the cation and/or counter anion on the resulting properties of IL-modified PMMA blends were analyzed. It was found that the use of low amounts of ILs (2 wt.%) improved the thermal stability. A plasticizing effect of ILs is evidenced by a decrease in glass transition temperature Tg of the modified PMMA, allowing to get large st… Show more

“…The concentration of the additives varied from 1 to 5 wt.% in the case of IL, and 0.5 to 1 wt.% in the case of GO. These ranges were chosen after a bibliographic search and an earlier work [ 22 , 43 , 44 ]. Previous testing showed that the best sample preparation and processability were found when the samples with the concentrations shown in Table 2 were used.…”

“…There has been growing interest in the combination of polymers and ILs because of their promising potential applications and scientific concerns. 10–13 Complex intra- and inter-specific interactions including hydrogen bonding, cation–π interactions, electrostatic interactions, etc. have been demonstrated in polymer/IL mixtures.…”

“…In polymer/IL mixtures, previous studies only focused on the plasticizer effect of ILs, which apparently brings a decrease in the glass transition temperature of PMMA depending on the amounts or chemical structures of ILs. 12,13,28–30 By changing the IL structures, it was found that the glass transition temperature T g of PMMA in [C 4 mim][PF 6 ] is slightly higher than that in [C 4 mim][TFSI] at the same concentration, but the specific interactions in different PMMA/IL systems have not been discussed. 29,31 Watanabe et al 32 and Lodge et al 33 demonstrated two distinct glass transitions in PMMA/IL blends for samples prepared by either blending or in situ polymerization, especially at intermediate concentrations, indicating some local structure between PMMA and [C 2 mim][TFSI].…”

“…In this paper, ionic liquid 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazole hexa‐fluorophosphate ([BMIM]PF 6 ) is synthesized, and used to form novel ionic shear thickening combined with poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA). The investigation of rheological and viscoelastic properties of PMMA/[BMIM]PF 6 dispersion system can provide new ideas for further development of STFs 40–42 …”
