Ionic liquids and supercritical carbon dioxide: green and alternative reaction media for chemical processes

Abstract: Ionic liquids (ILs) and supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) are two promising types of reaction media for green chemical processes due to their unique properties. They can be integrated into chemical reactions as catalysts and solvents to develop green and environment-friendly processes. This review presents current research trends aiming to solve the major chemical engineering issues in light of a fundamental understanding of these media. Applications of these media in the petrochemical industry, biochemical enginee… Show more

“…In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in compressed gas media as new solvents for chemical reactions, including condensed gases and supercritical fluids [26][27][28][29]. The main advantages of these media include the possibility of adjusting their dissolving capacity and their instant removal from the reaction media.…”

“…38 Furthermore, ILs in the presence of CO 2 expand their applicability, as their melting point and viscosity decrease, thus, promoting mass transportation. 39 Consequently, the combination of ionic liquids with scCO 2 has found application in several catalytic processes, such as hydroformylations, hydrogenations or carboxylations of alkenes in IL-scCO 2 biphasic reaction media. [40][41][42][43] In the IL-scCO 2 reaction systems, the reactants and products are carried by the scCO 2 and IL is used as a reaction media.…”

“…In spite of the good performance of surfactants for C4 alkylation, the commercial surfactants, such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), contain the sodium and bromine elements, which can accelerate equipment corrosion 15 . ILs have been proved as potential catalysts or additives for C4 alkylation 4,[19][20][21] . The chloroaluminate-based ILs with Lewis acidity were the most frequently studied to enhance the C4 alkylation.…”
