Ionic liquids as reaction media in catalytic oxidations with manganese and iron pyridyl triazacyclononane complexes

Abstract: a b s t r a c tPyTACN)], 2b promote the high added value oxidation reaction of alkanes in mild conditions. In this work sustainability and selectivity of the oxidative system is improved with the use of the ionic liquids (ILs) as reaction medium. The possibility to recycle the catalytic phase without loss of the activity with respect to the original reaction in acetonitrile (MeCN) is reported.

“…Recently, ionic liquids were considered as valuable alternatives to traditionally used solvents such as acetonitrile. 88 The oxidation of cyclohexane with H2O2 and [Fe II (24d)(OTf)2] as the catalyst yields 20% oxygenated products with an A/K ratio of 8, indicating that the use of ionic liquids promotes a metal-centred reaction pathway (Table 1). In addition to tetradentate N-donor ligands a few examples for ligands with lower and higher denticity have been reported in the context of iron-based catalytic C−H bond oxygenation.…”

“…Various organic reactions are successfully carried out in ionic liquids. Additionally, they are used as reaction media in reactions with transition metals such as oxidation [4,5], hydrogenation [6,7], hydroformylation [8,9], oligomerization [10,11], and so on [12,13]. Chauvin 2 ]PF 6 (nbd = norbornadiene) complex and reported a higher activity than that in acetone media [14].…”

“…During conversion of disaccharide into 5-HMF, three reactions are involved, namely the hydrolysis of the disaccharide into its components (fructose and glucose), isomerization of glucose into fructose, and dehydration of fructose. In order to study the process of 5-HMF formation, the kinetic analysis of the dehydration of fructose catalyzed by ILs in DMSO was performed based on two step continuous reaction 33 as shown in Fig. 4 : hydrolysis of fructose into 5-HMF and by-products 2 ; degradation of 5-HMF into by-products 1, including formic acid, levulinic acid, humin, and so on.…”
