Ionophore-based ion-selective potentiometric and optical sensors

Abstract: This paper describes ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) and optodes with a focus on the fundamental mechanisms, response characteristics, and recognition elements (ionophores) described to date for these sensors. The topics covered review the most frequently encountered ideas about ionophore-based sensors, including the theoretical and experimental parameters that influence response, typical ionophore structures, useful membrane compositions, and applications. Since these sensors are applicable in a number of fie… Show more

“…11). The proposed Cd 2+ -ISE is robust to the interferences from O 2 and CO 2 and there are no obvious potential drifts during the measurements. The results are consistent with those of other carbon nanomaterialbased ASS-ISEs [12,16,25,51].…”

“…Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have been widely used to determine the activities of ions for environmental monitoring, medical diagnosis and industrial analysis [1][2][3]. However, due to the presence of the inner filling solution, the traditional liquid-contact ion-selective electrodes suffer from disadvantages of inconvenience for miniaturization, difficulty in production and fragility to external pressure [4].…”

“…2 Ionophore based ion-selective sensors have gained attention during the last decade because of their high selectivity, 3 and sulfur-containing ionophores are extremely interesting. 4 Thiosulfinates are the salts of thiosulfinic acids that contain a -S-S(O) functional group.…”

“…At present, there are two types of analysis in wide use to detect alkali ions in water: ion chromatography with conductivity detection 1 and ionophore-based ion-selective potentiometric and optical sensors. 2 High-performance ion chromatography demonstrates excellent alkali ion analysis results at trace levels in pure water; 3,4 however, the necessary sample volume and lengthy separation time are still problematic. Recent progress in the development of potentiometric sensors may be a solution for trace-level analytical problems.…”
