IOTA (Integrable Optics Test Accelerator): facility and experimental beam physics program

Abstract: The Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) is a storage ring for advanced beam physics research currently being built and commissioned at Fermilab. It will operate with protons and electrons using injectors with momenta of 70 and 150 MeV/c, respectively. The research program includes the study of nonlinear focusing integrable optical beam lattices based on special magnets and electron lenses, beam dynamics of space-charge effects and their compensation, optical stochastic cooling, and several other experime… Show more

“…The achieved beam parameters-energy, intensity, stability and emittance-fully meet the specifications of the program of accelerator R&D at the IOTA ring toward intensity frontier beams [19,46]. Besides this main goal, we plan to continue exploration of the SRF system performance with full ILC-type beam pulse specifications, such as 5 Hz repetition rate and up to 1 ms beam pulse length.…”

“…Table 3 presents main parameters of the linac beam. The FAST beamline is well equipped with necessary types of beam diagnostics (see details in [19]): beam position monitors (BPMs), transverse profile monitors to measure beam size, resistive wall current monitors to measure beam current and loss monitors to measure beam losses and serve as the primary protection element in the machine protection system, while the beam energy is measured with the help of two spectrometer magnets D122 and D600.…”

“…The Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) and Fermilab Accelerator Science & Technology (FAST) facility were created for advanced accelerator R&D and beam physics research [10]. The IOTA ring was commissioned for electron beam studies earlier this year and will be commissioned for proton beam studies starting in 2020 [11].…”

“…This approach leads to general insights about how the fields and characteristic impedances depend on kicker geometry. This study was motivated by the need of these kickers for generating beam echoes in the IOTA ring at Fermilab [10]. The small size of this ring (40 m circumference) calls for compact kickers.…”
