IPDI‐based polyurethane ionomer dispersions: Effects of ionic, nonionic hydrophilic segments, and extender on particle size and physical properties of emulsion cast film

Abstract: SYNOPSISIsophoron diisocyanate ( IPDI) -based polyester polyurethane ( P U ) dispersion in water was prepared in a prepolymer mixing process. Dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) , triethylamine (TEA), and triethyl tetramine (TETA) were used, respectively, as potential anionic center, neutralizing agent, and chain extender in aqueous phase. The effects of DMPA, butanediol ( B D ) , and nonionic hydrophilic segment, viz. monofunctional ethylene-propylene oxide ether polyol, on the particle size of dispersion and th… Show more

“…To reduce or eliminate organic solvents from the formulations, solvents should be partially or completely replaced with environmentally benign solvents (e.g. water), in the coating formulations to achieve little or no VOC content [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…PU has been gradually replaced by the waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) due to health and environmental concerns (Chan & Chen, 1993;Dreja, Heine, Tieke, & Junkers, 1997;Kim & Kim, 1991;Wicks, Wicks, & Rosthauser, 2002). WPU has many features of conventional organic solventborne PU with the advantages of low viscosity at high molecular weight, low toxicity, and good applicability (Kuan et al, 2005).…”

“…The aqueous polyurethane has advantages in environmental pollution, fire safety, and soil resistance compared with solventbased polyurethane (1). Therefore, much research has been done on aqueous polyurethane due to industrial demand according to intensifying environmental regulation (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). The aqueous polyurethane is typically prepared by incorporation of water-soluble segments in the polyurethane backbone chain.…”
