Ipsi- or Contralateral Patellar Tendon Graft in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Revision Surgery

Abstract: Twenty-four patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament revision surgery were studied postoperatively (12 with reharvested ipsilateral patellar tendon grafts and 12 with contralateral patellar tendon grafts). For comparison purposes, 12 matched patients with primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, who had been operated on using the same technique by the same surgeons, were chosen. The median time since the first reconstruction was 57 months (range, 15 to 132) in the ipsilateral tendon group an… Show more

“…Previous studies reported a global IKDC A ? B rate between 12 and 83% [14,15,17,22,27,30,41]. Considering the same criteria for failure previously used in the literature, the 11% failure rate reported in this study is consistent with that reported recently by Ferretti et al [13], Salmon et al [32], Denti et al [11], and Muneta et al [26].…”

“…When comparing the operated and contralateral sides, even though cross sectional areas are similar, some strength deficits may persist, but the actual clinical impact of this is unknown [17]. On the other hand, the contralateral patellar tendon was not used to avoid the risk of patellar bone fracture and patellar tendon rupture [18].…”

“…In clinical outcome studies, O'Shea et al [9] reported that a reharvested patellar tendon could be used for revision ACL reconstruction. Kartus et al [7] described that reharvesting the ipsilateral patellar tendon resulted in Fig. 2 a Normal tendon: normal semitendinosus tendon shows compact, longitudinally oriented collagen fibers and thin linear fibroblast nuclei.…”
